So, tomorrow Eliana turns one. ONE. And what a one-year-old she is. We love this girl so much!
This past month she has started standing
independently (no-hands, no leaning) as a conscious action. She loves doing it. She also took three
steps once, towards me as she had just signed nurse and meant business, but
those were not on purpose it seemed and she didn’t really realize she had done
it I don’t think – meaning she hasn’t worked on it again since.
One time she was standing in the bathtub she
peed – she then looked at me and with a smile ‘cued’ herself with a ‘sshhhh’
and after I said “Yes, you peed” and patted my chest (our sign for pee) she
looked seriously at me and did a ‘slow-clap’ styled one-fisted open-handed
Tarzan style pee-sign. Meaning exaggerated slap – hand way out to her side and
then in to chest, and with great force, about seven times. Very intensely
serious at first, then with a big smile. Pretty hilarious. That’s the only time
she’s signed pee yet, and she’s not interested in telling me before she needs
to go, nor interested in using the potty/toilet when given the opportunity
unless it is the early morn. And when I say early, I mean early… 5:00-5:30 is the norm, even a 4:30 once in a while. Sleep is
an artform we have yet to master.
She loves to do double-eyed winks.
She has started working on the sound ‘L’ –
perhaps so she can say Leona (still calls ‘mama’ after her when Leona leaves the
room :P)
Can work on climbing up and down small
step-ups for long periods of time – like the back of the bike at kindergarten,
the wide steps at our front door, and rock-boulders. This built up to her
actually climbing down the stairs from the 2nd floor (and then up
them, and then down them, repeatedly). She used to crawl full speed over to the
top of the stairs but never attempt to go over the edge. No more. Her technique isn’t
just a backward butt-first crawl down, though it is getting there, and so
though she hasn’t been close to falling down I am by no means confident enough
in her stability to let her crawl freely. Of course.
She’s beautified the walls of the living
room with markers (sorry mom!)…as did Leona once when we first moved in (in our
old place it was ok to draw on the wall with the washable markers, but here
there is string-wallpaper, and so the washable markers don’t wash off).
She enjoys us reading to her – which is new
for us as Leona is also just now starting to enjoy reading actual stories, not
just discussing the pictures on the pages.
She is super independent. Can keep herself
occupied for long stretches of time, moving from one activity to the next. This
is good, as Leona is needing more interaction in her play sometimes (cue
video). They are good at wrecking havoc together though, too.
Her, Leona and Judge have been different
degrees of sick the past week, and Eliana surprised me by starting to blow her
nose when I wiped it. Though, sometimes she blows from her mouth instead of her
nose. But she at least knows there’s supposed to be a blowing sound. Super
cute.
Still loves getting herself into various
containers - and Leona loves to get in on the fun with her. Eliana also enjoys pushing the containers around the floor as a sport.
Speaking of pushing, she
also likes to push around stools, chairs, small toy cars, the xylophone on
wheels, and more such fun.
She loves to paint with shaving foam in the bathtub.
She often starts off semi-fearless, then
experiences some frights and calms it down, then builds it up again with more
controlled actions. Example: She used to climb up onto their little art table
all.the.time and sit there and play. Sometimes she would come down by herself just
scooting backward right off the edge, but it was a bit higher than she was
comfortable with (she would topple backward sometimes) so she stopped doing
that. Then she stopped climbing up for a couple weeks after she fell off the
table backward three times within a week and a half – each time into a
container that is placed beside the table and so thankfully she didn’t get
injured, ‘just’ scared. Now she has started climbing up again, and practicing
getting down via the puff-stool, putting one leg over the edge of the table
first, swinging it around hard until she meets the puff-stool, and then sliding
down off the table.
She loves to eat with a fork.
There’s of course
more, every day, many times a day, something new, something cute, something
amazing. She is generally happy, loves Leona, knows what she wants, loves to
play with us, LOVES to nod her head in affirmation when we ask her questions
(unless it is something she definitely doesn’t want or need to do). Cutest thing ever. And oh how we love her. Did I mention that already?
