The last while she's been very focused on that things she's not keen on doing now, she may be ok with when she's four, with each such statement always followed by an 'agush' (I guess) and 'maybe'. Like starting preschool (being ok with staying there with just the aunties and other kids, and not one of us).
[We're not signing her up for a start in the fall this year, though I think she could be ready by then...we've decided to wait until we have a steady income as though the cost isn't huge, it would be a big chunk of our current budget; this is something Leona knows, but she still talks about maybe being ok with starting, if the opportunity should arize].
Of course, talking about birthdays, she is always mentioning how she is going to eat ice cream on her birthday (and on all our birthdays...first hers, then mine, then maybe Cedrik's - depending on when he is born, then Eliana's, and then Judge's). And when we went and bought ice cream in preparation for her impending birthday about a week and a half before the big day, the focus shifted hugely onto its near proximity.
She started to mention daily that she was turning 4 in so-and-so many days, and that she was going to eat ice cream and cake, and make a present 'agush, maybe, probably, I think so' (I had told her that we had bought a present for her, and so since she doesn't yet have a concept of what presents are really, but remembered that there was some link between her birthday and a present, this is what she came up with, since we usually make special-day cards together as well as cake and cookies, etc.).
And as the day got closer, the frequency of her mentioning her turning four, becoming a big girl, and all that jazz, increased exponentially.
Towards the end she had set up this plan for her birthday eats:
- There was no mention of birthday waffles, as they have waffles about 4-5 days a week, if not more often lately, but rather whole-wheat Cheerios for breakfast, as that is a real treat for them.
- The mid-morning snack was to be yogurt
- Lunch was to be fresh baked bread (I ended up opting for finish-bake bread...the kind that is half done and you pop in the oven for 8-12 minutes to finish up)
- After lunch, while Eliana was napping, she was going to eat the lollipop a store clerk had given her a few days earlier (she's never had a lollipop before, nor any other kind of candy-type-stuff like that)
- After Eliana woke up they were going to have ice cream and cake - strawberry upon her request
- And for dinner she wanted fresh baked pizza (we haven't had it in a long time - earlier we had it once a week)
[the furniture is super detailed, with all cabinets and drawers openable...the people that came with were a bit creepy so I threw them out and just put the brio-train people in instead, which works really well both in size and in that she has already attributed each of us to each of them]
We awoke to a light splattering of snow on the lawn and roofs, and Leona asked "Why did it snow on my birthday?!" - yes, she is very much still in the 'why' phase. Luckily the snow meldted within a couple hours.

She then saw the doll house - looked at it a bit and asked a few questions about it, and then joined Eliana at the table to munch on Cheerios that were prepped and waiting.
They then played with the doll house for quite a while, before I said they could watch a video if they wanted - Leona chose Totoro (and they had more Cheerios as a movie-snack), and I made some low-sugar sponge-cake-esque cupcake things, that were to be kind of like a Norwegian 'moist cake', using whipped cream and strawberries as the filling and decor. I actually used an apple cake recipe, reducing the sugar and adjusting the process and amounts of some of the ingredients, and of course didn't include the apples or cinnamon, and then baked them in muffin tins rather than as a cake, so that it was more portionable.
And then the day continued to proceed pretty much as she had planned.
[she had lunch while E was falling asleep...here finishing up chewing and swallowing her last bite, rinsing it down with some milk, before tasting the lollipop and coming up with a very satisfied 'it's gooood' through a smile; she spent about half an hour or more sitting there eating it contentedly]
[serious highlight of the day...made even better by the hot coco in their mugs - hot coco being something they tasted for the first time up at the cabin over Easter, and I got a free packet in the mail with my pregnancy training clothes that I recently bought online]

[here E got tons of water in one of her boots...making me seriously consider investing in barnevaderen for the kids - boots welded to rainpants]
[she blew out the candle after I sang the birthday song in Norwegian...E also had a candle to blow out, upon her own request]
[they were more into the hair-clips-with-colorful-extensions she got from my mom than the cake]
[Ends up that it really wasn't that they didn't like the cake per se, though they were maybe really not a big fan of the combination with the added embellishments, because this morning I warmed the muffins up a bit and added butter, and they gobbled down a ton.]
After the cake-eating they watched an episode each of three super awesome 'kid-TV' programs we have found on an NRK app (usually their limit is two...each episode is 10 min long), and then it was pizza time....which went down in a similar fashion as the cake-eating - a few bites each, and they were done.
[ketchup!! - a must on pizza and quesadillas and more]
And then the meltdowns started. Some serious business that. I can't imagine how it will be when they actually start attending birthday parties, with all the masses amounts of sugar and stimulation of all the games and kids running around and all. I mean, this whole day was just in our home, just us four, no real big variations to our routine, and the only real sugar was from the ice cream - and lollipop for L. I think the whole build-up of the birthday that Leona had created for herself was a big factor for Leona though...and for E I think it was the sugar, for sure, as she had a whole ice cream sandwich.
They didn't fall asleep until pretty late (9pm or so), but I was able to be very patient, as I knew I had brought it upon myself.
All in all it was a great day for Leona, I think.
She asked me, as we were laying in bed, whether some of her clothes were too small, and which ones - the thought behind the question being that she is now so big, four years old, that a lot of her clothes must be too small for her. Same as that throughout the day she would sometimes reach up on the bookshelf to help take down a book, and mention that she is so big now that she could just reach it without climbing on something first.
Cute as cute can be.
