Last week Judge finally had a chance to discuss our plans with his dad - which we had been a bit nervous about previously (originally we were waiting until after Leona was born, because the plan was to be in Norway from the fall until next year summer, and then go to China to help out in his dad's business - and Judge was worried that his dad would want him to go over asap once he knew Judge was planning on heading over).
When my mom was here we had a mini-chance to lightly touch on it, but it wasn't a good time to get into details. However, we found out in the mini-session that Judge's dad didn't want him to come over too soon - he said in 2 or 3 years the time may be right, once the business is more stable (it's an upstart...that is speeding so fast it's almost coming off its hinges...his dad is seriously an amazing business man). My heart leaped with joy.
Anyhow, last Friday they finally had a chance to really discuss it, and after hearing Judge's (our) thoughts and reasons for wanting to go, he felt it was totally a great idea and is 100% behind us (!). What a relief. The selling points:
- I haven't been back to Norway in too long, so since we are now getting married (in his dad's eyes - the make-up wedding banquet in our eyes) Judge wants to take me back to Norway for a while (don't get me started on the 'take me back' bit...).
- Judge can study English while he's there, and maybe get some work experience, so when we come back to Taiwan, he could get a job with an international company, earning closer to what he does now, but with oh-so reasonable hours (now = not even remotely close to reasonable hours).
So, the make-up banquet will be held sometime in November (still super not excited about it), and we are looking into tickets to Norway for the beginning of December (look to have found some awesome 1 year tickets).
It is all a bit surreal for me at the moment. Yesterday it suddenly hit me. I am really going back to Norway. Wow. Up until four and a half years ago I never saw myself moving back really (not that I saw myself being anywhere else specifically either). Then, after bringing Judge and his sister with me for my sister's wedding, I fell in love with Norway - helped by Judge and us realizing it totally suits our life-joys. Since then we've been dreaming planning on getting there, but the plans have each time been pushed back. Now here we are!
Ideally we will stay for three years at least, but - don't know if you remember how complicated it was to get all the paperwork figured out for us to get married (sorry, I know I wrote about it but when I overhauled my blog I deleted lots of posts and that seems to have been one of them), but in any event that is basically the same level of complicated we're going to face if we're to stay longer than a year, but with a heavier dose of luck effort needed in the mix.
But for sure we can stay for one year, so, one step at a time.
Thankfully first year's visa was figured out last year and is super easy to get for him: visa for Norwegian language courses for skilled workers - allows him to come for a year to study Norwegian and work up to 20 hours a week. Since he will be staying home with Leona he won't be working - he's super excited about this after this hellish work year. But unfortunately the only Norwegian language courses are 2.5 hours one day a week...shotty. To stay longer he will have to learn English good enough to be able to land a job, or we'll have to ask immigration to ixnay one of their spousal-visa application requirements and accept our application when we first arrive.
AND thankfully getting O'Lime over is easy-peasy as well. Yay!
So Tromsø and winter-darkness and snow and northern lights and MOM here we come!
